Having returned to West Surrey Racing for the 2012 season, there was something of a surprise at the end of the season when Tom Onslow-Cole revealed that he was to move on after just a single year back with the BMW team - especially when it emerged that he would be joining Tony Gilham's Team HARD. operation to drive its all-new VW Passat CC.
Going into 2013, hopes were high of a successful season, despite the fact that the new car wasn't ready to turn a wheel until the morning of qualifying for the season opener at Brands Hatch.
Despite that, Onslow-Cole picked up two finishes from the opening round and showed the potential that was within the big VW with a top six finish at Donington Park in only the second meeting for the car.
Few would have expected that Onslow-Cole would be on the podium by round three, but the high-speed curves of Thruxton were clearly well suited to the Passat as Onslow-Cole picked up a brace of podium finishes, including a second place finish in race two that would prove to be his best result of the season.
Thruxton would be something of a false dawn however, and although there was another podium at Croft, the progress that both team and driver had hoped for didn't materialise.
Ahead of Rockingham came the news of a split with the team, with Onslow-Cole then joining Airwaves Racing for the final three rounds. It wouldn't be until Brands Hatch that TOC was able to get the best from his new Ford Focus with a strong fourth place in race one and the 26-year-old will hope that he can build on that result if he returns with the team in 2014.
