WEC: Davidson, Buemi and Toyota on cusp of 2014 WEC title

Toyota is on the verge of wrapping up at least the 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship drivers' title as a fourth win in six races for Anthony Davidson and Sebastien Buemi in China moved them to within striking distance of the crown.

Another dominant showing for the duo during the Shanghai 6 Hours, the Anglo-Swiss pair unleashed the full advantage Toyota TS040 over its rivals when the decision to pit (twice, after the first stop was bungled) under an early safety car prompted a swift recovery from the back of the field to lead much of the race.

Leading a Toyota 1-2, Davidson and Buemi's result puts the pair 42 points clear of Audi's Andre Lotterer, Marcel Fassler and Benoit Treluyer with two races remaining and only a maximum of 52 points up for grabs.

"The whole team did a great job with the right strategy and solid pit stops; everyone kept calm and focused on getting the result," he said. "We showed we had the fastest car in Fuji and we've done that again here in Shanghai.

"We didn't want to take too many risks, particularly in traffic so it was a relatively quiet race for me; Seb did all the spectacular work at the start. To get such a result at this stage of the season is huge for us and now we aim to continue like this in the final two races."

"I'm really happy because this is a good step towards the championship," Buemi added. "It makes the win even sweeter when it's a one-two; it's the best result we could imagine today. The team performed really well, as did Anthony. All in all it was a very good race and the car worked well from beginning to end. It's our third one-two this season, after Fuji and Silverstone, so now I can't wait for Bahrain. Hopefully we can keep going like this."

Though not quite as clear cut, Toyota is also now well placed to win the manufacturers' title, arguably the more desired crown, having moved 29 points ahead of Audi with only races in Bahrain and Brazil to go.
