The Northern Territory Government has secured a deal which will see the V8 Supercar Championship return to Darwin until 2018.

Chief Minister Paul Henderson said the NT Government had signed a long term agreement with V8 Supercars Australia.

"This is one of our most exciting and important major events - loved by Territorians and visitors alike," he said. "The V8 Supercars weekend has become a great celebration of our Territory lifestyle - starting with the truck convoy through the City on Thursday and ending with great music on Sunday night - this year with the Presets. In between we have some great car racing and Jimmy Barnes.

"The event also showcases the attractions and lifestyle of the Top End - attracts average crowds of 40,000 people, and injects more than $8 million into the local economy.

"I'm delighted we can plan our major events calendar around the V8 Supercars for almost a decade."

V8 Supercars Australia Executive Chairman Tony Cochrane said the announcement highlighted a cherished relationship with the Northern Territory Government.

"The Northern Territory Government recognises the enormous impact a V8 Supercar event has on the economy, tourism and in promoting their region, not to mention staging a World class event for the people," he said. "We have been overwhelmed by the support and hospitality of the Government, Chief Minister Paul Henderson, Paul Cattermole and his team at Northern Territory events and everybody from this fantastic part of the world.

"It's no secret that Darwin and the SKYCITY Triple Crown is a favourite amongst our drivers, teams and our staff. Year after year we can't wait to get back to the special feeling of the Top End and this particular weekend.

"Now, to be coming back for at least another decade, shows just how much the Northern Territory Government values V8 Supercars, what it does for the Territory economically and how confident we both are in a very long and prosperous future together."

The new contract means that V8 Supercars Australia now has significant long-term partnerships with most state Governments in the country to stage annual events that in most cases are the biggest in their respective states each year.
