Sutton: Best I've felt in a car

Ash Sutton says driving the Infiniti Q50 is the 'best he's felt in a car' after taking the Laser Tools Racing built machine's first ever British Touring Car Championship race victory at Donington Park.

The 2017 champion produced a sensational charge from eighth position in race three to take his first win with the Laser Tools Racing outfit, as well as giving the Infiniti its first win in the series.

After qualifying a strong third, Sutton could well have also won the opening race of the day at Donington Park, had it not been for a brief moment of contact with Team BMW's Colin Turkington after taking the race lead.

At the point of recovering from his spin in race one, Sutton was plum last, but the Infiniti racer took full advantage of a safety car phase during the latter stages of that race to move himself back into contention with a 14th place finish.

Sutton's pace was rampant throughout the day as he comfortably set the fastest lap in each of the three races, averaging 0.4s quicker than the next fastest car.

"This is just what we needed. The car gives me a hell of a lot of confidence and it’s allowing me to do these things," said Sutton.

"We made a couple of little tweaks for that race the bits we were missing that I mentioned in qualifying and we definitely solved them then. I’m over the moon with that.

"As long as we can keep this momentum going, I know I’ve got the best team behind me with Laser Tools Racing and BMR Engineering. I couldn’t ask for a better outfit.

"The car is absolutely phenomenal. I feel at home in it, it’s the best I’ve ever felt in a car so we’re ticking a lot of boxes here, we just need that little luck at the end and we’ll be sailing."

As virtue of his 15th career BTCC win, Sutton sits third in the drivers’ standings, just nine-points adrift early leader and reigning champion Colin Turkington.
