BTCC Croft: Ingram quickest in incident-packed qualifying

Toyota Gazoo Racing UK's Tom Ingram set the quickest time during an incident-packed British Touring Car Championship qualifying shootout at Croft, but looks set to lose pole position after failing the mandatory ride-height check.

In a session which was dominated by wet weather, two red flag incidents and countless track limits time removals, Ingram set the fastest time to claim what would have been his first pole position of 2020.

However, with Ingram's Toyota Corolla failing the ride-height check, BTC Racing's Josh Cook could inherit pole position after the Honda driver set the second fastest time behind Ingram.

The 30-minute shootout had already proved dramatic enough with both Laser Tools Racing Infiniti drivers Aiden Moffat and, more crucially, championship leader Ash Sutton going off at turn one, both triggering red flag incidents.

That set up a final 10-minute showdown with the track conditions ever improving with a drying line.

Prior to the red-flag, Senna Proctor looked on course to take a famous maiden BTCC pole position, not only for himself, but also a first for Hyundai in the series.

But Proctor was unable to match the pace of Ingram and Cook and eventually slipped back to third ahead MB Motorsport's Jake Hill.

Hill was another driver who briefly held the fastest time, but a puncture mid-way through the session put the Honda driver on the back foot for the remainder of the running.

Defending four-time champion Colin Turkington took advantage of his title rival Sutton's error and qualified in fifth, with his Team BMW stablemate Tom Oliphant and Bobby Thompson acting as rear-gunners between himself and Sutton's Infiniti in eighth.

Despite sitting the rest of the session out following his off, Sutton still hung onto eighth, while Honda duo Tom Chilton and Matt Neal completed the remainder of the top-ten order.
