Turkington chasing 'more speed' after difficult qualifying

Colin Turkington admits his Team BMW outfit 'need to find more speed' after the British Touring Car Championship points leader qualified eighth for the first of Sunday's three title deciding races at Brands Hatch.

Heading into the opening race, Turkington carries a slender nine-point lead ahead of Ash Sutton, but will start five positions behind his main title rival, who qualified a strong third behind fellow championship contenders Tom Ingram and Rory Butcher.

At one point during the 30-minute qualifying shootout, Turkington faced the prospect of starting race one outside of the top-ten, but the 38-year old managed to make a late move up the order to eighth before the session's final red flag.

Aside from the title battle, eighth position in Saturday's qualifying session was good enough for Turkington to clinch the Goodyear Wingfoot Award as the best qualifier during the 2020 season.

“It was a difficult session as there was not much grip. We were just trying to get the tyres working and trying to get them switched on. We did make gains at the end and found a chunk of time to go eighth," said Turkington.

"I’d prefer to be higher up, but it could also have been the case that we could have ended up further down. We do need to find some more speed for tomorrow, as we expect the conditions to be about the same, so for us I think the wetter the better.

"It’s really nice to be taking the Goodyear Wingfoot Award home. It’s something I’ve had my eye on all year as it rewards our strong qualifying performances, so I think it’s our just rewards to have picked up the trophy."
