Verstappen was cruising towards pole position until a shocking power problem thwarted his effort, and left him 15th on the grid. Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez instead took pole position.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc qualified in second but came into the weekend with a 10-place penalty hanging over him. 

Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso and Mercedes' George Russell will begin the race in second and third, respectively. Lewis Hamilton qualified in eighth.
