Fernando Alonso's comments regarding two of his biggest rivals may have been regurgitated some months after he originally made them, but still make for interesting reading, particularly after further praise for Lewis Hamilton in the run-in to the 2011 finale.

Thus the question remains, as it would when comparing any two drivers at the forefront of the sport, whether Hamilton is actually better than double - and reigning - F1 world champion Sebastian Vettel?

He may have had a poor 2011 season, just as the German was romping unchallenged to a second successive crown, but has Hamilton really lost the ability to turn grands prix on their head? Would a more competitive McLaren help return him to the role of title contender? Or has Vettel, with the Red Bull, stolen a march on his most obvious direct comparison?
