McLaren's recent commitment to carbon reduction and environmental efficiency was recognised on a global scale when the company was awarded the silver medal at the 2012 Edison Awards in New York.

The awards build on the founding principles of the great American inventor Thomas Edison, and champion groundbreaking scientific achievement. While McLaren could have been nominated for various innovations over the years, however, it was its recent conversion to environmental issues that finally won with the judges.

Included among the contenders in the prestigious Green Implementation category for its ground-breaking efforts to improve carbon efficiency, McLaren was able to add to the Carbon Trust Standard awarded over a three-year assessment by taking home the silver award from the Edison panel. The Woking company has achieved annual savings of over 1500 tonnes of CO2 emissons and earned official carbon-neutral status prior to making the trip to NYC.

"I'm delighted that our ongoing efforts to manage and improve our carbon efficiency have been recognised by the Edison Awards judging panel," team principal Martin Whitmarsh said, "This is a fantastic achievement for the whole team.

"The nominees' list at last night's ceremony in New York read like a Who's Who of the great and good in the world of inspirational technical innovation, and I'm immensely proud that our team has been recognised on that list.

"While our silver medal is further validation of the steps we've made, and certainly helps showcase our efforts on a global level, it is still merely the starting point for an ongoing and concerted mission to ensure that Vodafone McLaren Mercedes conducts its business in an environmentally conscious and responsible way."
