Lewis Hamilton fought back from third place to claim victory in the Canadian Grand Prix, becoming the seventh different winner in as many races in 2012.

The Briton had led from the first round of pit-stops, but ceded the advantage to Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel when his McLaren team assured him that both of his rivals would also be two stopping. When they continued into the closing stages, however, Hamilton had to pass both on the road in order to make it back to the front - a feat which he accomplished by lapping a second faster with every lap and catching Vettel eight laps from home and Alonso two laps later.

Red Bull and Ferrari were both handed further evidence that their strategy was not the right one, as Vettel pitted a lap after being passed for second, dropping to fifth before a brush with the Wall of Champions almost claimed him, and Alonso dropped off the podium as both Romain Grosjean and Sergio Perez surged past the Ferrari in the final four laps. Vettel then also caught and passed the championship leader at the hairpin to avoid losing further ground in the bigger picture, although Hamilton's win combined with their slide down the order puts the Briton on top overall.

Alonso eventually crossed the line in fifth, just 0.4secs ahead of Nico Rosberg, with Mark Webber, Kimi Raikkonen, Kamui Kobayashi and Felipe Massa completing the scorers.

Jenson Button was unable to match either his 2011 victory or Hamilton's 2012 performance, coming home a lapped 16th after three pit-stops, while Michael Schumacher's bad luck continued when he was forced to retire with his DRS jammed open.
