Fernando Alonso and his wife have escaped uninjured from an aeroplane accident as the double Formula 1 World Champion tried to return from holiday in Kenya aboard his private jet.

According to Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Alonso and his singer wife, Raquel del Rosario, were leaving Malindi Airport to return to Spain, following a break at Renault F1 managing director Flavio Briatore's luxury Lion in the Sun resort in Kenya.

It was reported that shortly after take-off early on Sunday evening, the right wing of the plane struck a building, leading to the pilot momentarily losing control. The pilot was subsequently treated for shock, whilst all members on-board - including Raquel's sister and her partner - were able to exit the aircraft happily unscathed.

Following the incident, the party postponed its European return to today (Monday).

"Fernando was involved in a plane incident but he and his family are fine," a Renault spokesperson told Crash.net. "His plane touched a building and damaged its wing.

"Therefore they had to postpone their return to Europe, but Fernando is now in the plane. As a team we don't have any special comment to make, but we are of course pleased that it was not more dramatic."
