“Obvious” who would leave Racing Point F1 team for Vettel - Perez
Sergio Perez says it is “obvious” who would make way at Racing Point if the team did sign Sebastian Vettel for the 2021 Formula 1 season.
Ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Vettel - who is leaving Ferrari at the end of the season - confirmed he has held “loose talks” with Racing Point about joining the team when it rebrands into the Aston Martin works squad next year.
Current Racing Point drivers Perez and Lance Stroll both have contracts for next year, and the Silverstone-based outfit has reiterated its intention to continue with the same line-up for 2021, though team principal Otmar Szafnauer has refused to definitively rule out a move for Vettel.
As the son of Racing Point team and new Aston Martin chairman Lawrence Stroll, it is widely expected that Stroll will be retained.
Speaking in an interview for Movistar+ F1, Perez suggested he would likely be the one who makes way in the event of Vettel arriving.
"I think [the choice] is obvious if someone has to go," Perez said.
"I'm a dad, I wouldn't kick my son out, but there's not much I can say. There are many [rumours] around. From me, nothing - everything remains the same. I have a contract with the team.”
Perez made it clear in Hungary that he has a valid contract for 2021, but confirmed in the interview that he does have a break clause in his current Racing Point agreement.
"In all contracts, there are always clauses," Perez explained. “It is a bit related to sponsorship. That can open that clause.
"But we're working hard with all our sponsors so that this does not happen. I would not say that it depends on a single sponsor, it is more of an overall issue.”
The Mexican revealed he has already received approaches from teams in other motorsport categories, as well as another F1 outfit - believed to be Alfa Romeo - for next year.
“I know that during the week the rumours came out and we actually got contacted by a team in the paddock. I won’t say names,” Perez said on Thursday in Hungary.
“Also other teams in other categories, which was quite a surprise because we have a contract for the next few years here but at the moment they are just rumours around.”
