Lance Stroll has been summoned to the stewards for not respecting yellow flags in qualifying, having claimed a shock maiden Formula 1 pole position at the Turkish Grand Prix.

The Canadian beat Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to a stunning first career pole during a wet qualifying on F1’s first visit to Istanbul Park since 2011, becoming the first non-Mercedes driver to top qualifying so far this season.

But his maiden F1 pole could be under threat after Stroll was called to see the stewards for an alleged offence regarding a yellow flag incident which occurred in Q3 when Racing Point teammate Sergio Perez spun at Turn 7.

The FIA issued a bulletin confirming that Stroll was under investigation, which will take place at 18:30 local time (3.30pm GMT).

A potential grid penalty would strip Stroll of his maiden F1 pole and result in Verstappen starting from the very front of the grid for Sunday’s Turkish Grand Prix.

Stroll said after qualifying that he was “shocked” to have topped qualifying for the first time in 75 grand prix appearances.

“I can’t really put it into words right now, I’m shocked," said Stroll. "I didn't expect us to be up here after P3.

“There were a lot of things that we weren't sure of coming into qualifying. We didn't look too competitive in P3, but I'm so happy right now.”

McLaren’s Lando Norris has also been summoned to see the stewards for allegedly failing to slow down for double yellow flags waved late on in Q1 when Nicholas Latifi beached his Williams in the gravel.
