Grosjean has seat fitting ahead of farewell F1 test
Romain Grosjean’s farewell Formula 1 test has moved a step closer after he completed a seat fitting.
The Frenchman has been keen to have a final test outing in an F1 car to properly say goodbye to the sport after his career was cut short by two races due to the burn injuries he suffered in his terrifying fireball crash at last year’s Bahrain Grand Prix.
Mercedes is expected to arrange the test for Grosjean after team principal Toto Wolff said his side would be willing to let the former Haas driver have a private outing in one of the team’s world championship-winning F1 cars.
Speaking during a livestream with fans about his switch to IndyCar in late February, Grosjean said he was in the process of “finalising the plan” with Mercedes.
The executive producer of Netflix’s Drive to Survive documentary series, James Gay-Rees, revealed Grosjean has now completed a seat fitting.
“We were filming with Grosjean for a seat fitting today,” Gay-Rees told the In The Fast Lane podcast. “He’s having one last spin with a team.”
A Mercedes spokesperson declined to confirm whether Grosjean had been at the team’s factory for the seat fitting when reached for comment by Crash.net.
Such a test would have to be organised around Grosjean’s IndyCar commitments, with the 34-year-old due to make his debut in the series at the season-opening Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber Motorsport Park on 18 April.
It is likely to take place at Silverstone in a Mercedes car that is at least two years old, meaning Grosjean could get the chance to drive Mercedes’ 2019 title-winning W10.
