Ben Edwards: 'Will Leclerc-Sainz maintain good relationship in title battle?'

F1 commentator Ben Edwards has questioned how long Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz will be able to maintain their good relationship should Ferrari remain title challengers throughout the 2022 season.

Leclerc kicked off the season in Bahrain with an impressive win ahead of Ferrari teammate Sainz to start the season in the best way possible.

F1 history has taught us that two drivers fighting for the championship in the same team often turns sour, and Edwards believes Ferrari could have a similar scenario on its hands.

“I think it’s a very good pairing,” Edwards said on the latest episode of the Crash.net F1 podcast. “We all feel that it’s a very strong pairing in Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. Is it going to stay as friends, if you’ve got the best car it’s a little bit of a concern that if they start fighting for the championship, will they manage to maintain that good relationship?

“Sadly, in the past, we’ve seen that go wrong. Gilles Villeneuve and Didier Pironi were good mates back in the day but they fell out badly after an incident at Imola then of course it all went horribly wrong after that.

“Let’s just hope they can work together and if they are the lead team throughout that they don’t get too rough with each other.”

Edwards was joined on Crash.net's F1 podcast by Crash.net's F1 Editor Lewis Larkam, RaceFans journalist Claire Cottingham and Podcast host Harry Benjamin to discuss several topics including McLaren’s shocking weekend and the upcoming Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
