In a dramatic start to the race, Hamilton and Verstappen came together at Copse as Hamilton attempted to take the lead with a late dive into the corner.

Hamilton had already seen attempts to pass Verstappen at Abbey and Brooklands rebuffed before he lunged down the inside at Copse having tucked into the Red Bull driver’s slipstream.

With neither driver backing out into the high-speed corner, Hamilton’s front left tyre made contract with Verstappen’s rear right, sending the championship leader hurtling into the barriers.

Verstappen was winded in the high-impact with the barriers but was able to walk away from his car, before being taken to the medical centre for precautionary checks.

The British GP was red-flagged following the incident so barrier repairs can be carried out, while the incident is under investigation.

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner called Hamilton’s move “desperate” and “dirty driving”.

Charles Leclerc was leading the British GP from Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas at the time the race was suspended.
