It was a busy first practice session for F1's 2022 Spanish Grand Prix with all teams except Haas bringing new upgrades to this weekend's race.

Barcelona is a mixture of low, medium and high-speed corners so it gives teams the necessary data to determine whether their new parts are working.

Charles Leclerc set the pace for Ferrari with a run on the softs, beating teammate Carlos Sainz by less than a tenth of a second.

Reigning F1 champion Max Verstappen was third-fastest after encountering traffic in the final sector on his best effort.

The Dutchman was 0.3s down but will be confident going into the second session given his lap was disrupted.

Behind the usual top three was George Russell in the Mercedes, just 0.6s down on Leclerc's top time.

Fernando Alonso was a strong fifth in front of his home crowd, ahead of former McLaren teammate Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton was a few tenths shy of Russell but encountered traffic in the form of Alonso on his best effort.

Lando Norris, Pierre Gasly, Daniel Ricciardo and Yuki Tsunoda rounded out the top 10.

Nyck de Vries was 18th on his first outing for Williams as teams are all required to run a rookie driver on two occasions in 2022.

Juri Vips was in the Red Bull in place of Sergio Perez - he was 20th overall.
