Renault Formula 1 reserve driver Jack Aitken will switch to Campos Racing for his sophomore Formula 2 campaign in 2019.
The 23-year-old Briton struggled to match ART Grand Prix teammate and eventual champion George Russell as he finished 11th in the 2018 standings, though he did manage a breakthrough victory at the sprint race in Barcelona following on from his maiden podium in Baku.
ART announced a new driver line-up consisting of GP3 runner-up Nikita Mazepin and Nick de Vries for 2019, prompting Aitken to make the move to Campos, filling the first seat at the Spanish squad he drove for during post-season testing in Abu Dhabi.
“I’m extremely excited to start working with Campos after a promising start in post-season testing,” said Aitken.
“They have the ambition and ability to compete at the very top, and although there’s plenty of work to be done I’m confident we’ll be up to it come Round 1. We are aiming for the top, nothing less."
Aitken won two Formula Renault titles in 2015 before stepping up to GP3 with Arden in 2016. He finished fifth in the standings before improving to second behind ART teammate Russell in 2017.
Campos president Adrian Campos added: “We are delighted to have Jack join our team.
“He is an extremely talented driver and putting all elements together we will fight for top honours. We will aspire to the highest goals with our work and Jack’s natural talent.”
