F2 Hungary: Ghiotto resists Ilott for sprint race victory

Luca Ghiotto held onto victory in the FIA Formula 2 sprint race at the Hungaroring after successfully pulling off an alternative strategy.

While the majority of his rivals made a tactical pit stop with tyre degradation playing a major factor in the race, Ghiotto rolled the dice by staying out.

The gamble paid off as the Hitech Grand Prix driver fended off the late-charging Callum Ilott to claim his first F2 win of the 2020 season by just four-tenths of a second.

Ilott closed up to the back of Ghiotto’s car during a tense final lap, but the Ferrari Academy driver simply ran out of road to convert his reverse-grid pole position into the win.

Prema’s Mick Schumacher made it two podiums from two races in Hungary as he took the final spot on the rostrum, some 11secs down on the leaders.

Schumacher beat his Prema teammate and current championship leader Robert Shwartzman, who bagged another strong result to follow up on his remarkable feature race win.

Nikita Mazepin was fifth for Hitech Grand Prix, ahead of Louis Deletraz in the Charouz.

Red Bull-backed Jehan Daruvala was just three-tenths behind Deletraz in seventh after struggling early on, while Renault F1 protege Guanyu Zhou claimed the final point on offer in eighth.

Rounded out the top-10 finishers were Marcus Armstrong and Giuliano Alesi, the other two Ferrari Driver Academy members.

Dan Ticktum had a promising start but was the only driver not to finish the race after being forced into retirement with engine trouble.
