Williams F1 junior Sargeant gets F2 promotion with Carlin
The American driver was announced as Williams’ latest signing to its young driver academy during the United States Grand Prix weekend.
Sargeant has spent the last two seasons in Formula 3, finishing seventh overall in the drivers’ standings in 2021.
He fared better during his first year in the series, finishing third overall, just four points behind Oscar Piastri.
He has already made his debut in F2, racing for HWA Racelab in Saudi Arabia.
“This is an incredible week for me,” Sargeant said. “To get my first taste of the Williams FW43B tomorrow and then follow that up with three days testing in my new F2 car is just incredible.
“I can’t wait to re-join Carlin who have been so strong in F2 and get to work on our 2022 programme.”
Sargeant’s teammate has yet to be announced with current driver Dan Ticktum switching to Formula E, while Jehan Daruvala’s future is unclear.
“I’m extremely excited to see Logan compete in next year’s FIA Formula 2 Championship,” said Williams Sporting Director Sven Smeets.
“I know it will be a great experience for him and it’s another key step towards his goal of racing in Formula 1.
“Logan’s FIA Formula 3 campaigns demonstrated his capabilities against many talented drivers, proving that he is more than capable of the promotion to Formula 2, and we will do our very best to continue supporting his development throughout the 2022 season.
“I’m also delighted that Williams will continue to be represented on the junior series’ grid, once again highlighting the team’s role in supporting and nurturing young driver talent.”
It’s been a busy day in F2 with Virtuosi Racing announcing Jack Doohan alongside Marino Sato.
Doohan impressed in the final F2 rounds of the seasons for Campos, getting an early taste for the series after finishing runner-up to Dennis Hauger in F3.
Also, Dutch team, Van Amersfoort Racing will join F2, taking over HWA’s entry from next season.
Founded back in 1975, Van Amersfoort has regularly competed in the junior categories, most notably in the now-defunct European F3 Championship.
2021 F1 champion Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and Mick Schumacher all drove for the team, highlighting its pedigree.
