With Schumacher 12th, Ticktum was able to trim the gap to 39 points with a fifth-place finish ahead of the penultimate round, but it only proved to be a stay of execution in the title battle.

While Schumacher was unable to pass Juri Vips, who took a dominant lights-to-flag victory in the second race, the German crossed the line in second place to secure the title. Ticktum fought from P15 on the grid to finish seventh, but was powerless to stop his rival from taking the crown.

Schumacher will have one final chance to add to his tally of eight wins this season in Sunday's finale, where he will start second on the grid behind Robert Shwartzman, who was crowned rookie champion on Saturday.

A move to Formula 2 is thought to be the most likely switch for Schumacher in 2019, but he is now eligible for an FIA Super License required to race in Formula 1 following his title win.
