Caldwell inherits first Formula 3 victory in chaotic second Spain sprint race
Olli Caldwell claimed his first Formula 3 victory after benefitting from two separate incidents involving drivers fighting for the lead at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Starting from seventh on the grid, Caldwell ran in sixth until chaos ensued at the front of the field.
The British driver moved up to fourth after Enzo Fittipaldi and David Schumacher collided at Turn 2 on Lap 15.
Once Schumacher’s car was cleared, Matteo Nannini and Dennis Hauger battled for the lead with Fittipaldi out of the race after grinding to a halt under the Safety Car.
Hauger collided with Nannini into Turn 1, after hitting the kerb, the Prema driver oversteered into HWA Racelab driver - ruining both of their races.
This handed Caldwell the lead ahead of Victor Martins.
Martins tried to attack Caldwell into Turn 1, with the latter defending the inside forcing the Frenchman to take to the Turn 2 run-off area.
Caldwell held on to take his first F3 victory ahead of Martins, with Mercedes junior Frederik Vesti completing the podium positions.
Clement Novalak picked up another big chunk of points in fourth, following his second-place finish in sprint race one, finishing ahead of Caio Collet.
Jonny Edgar was sixth ahead of Ayumu Iwasa and Jack Doohan.
Jak Crawford scored his maiden F3 points with ninth, while Juan Manuel Correa picked up his first point since returning to motorsport following his accident at Spa-Francorchamps in 2019.
The F3 weekend concludes tomorrow morning with the feature race.
Hauger will start from pole position ahead of Doohan and Martins.
