Having initially signed recent Formula 2 driver Guenther to the team on a three-race deal, Dragon confirmed in a statement on Wednesday that Nasr would be replacing the German driver from Mexico onwards. He will race alongside Jose Maria Lopez.
"I’m thrilled to be joining Geox Dragon at the Mexico City E-Prix. The series has been on my radar for a while now, and I feel that this is a remarkable opportunity," Nasr said.
"Formula E has taken big steps since it began and is now showing the way to the future, not only pushing the boundaries of the electric vehicle technology but also the way teams and drivers compete in a challenging single day event format in the heart of major city centres all around the world.”
Nasr had been due to test for Dragon in Marrakesh last month, but was unable to take part in the rookie running after talks with the team broke down at the last minute. The Brazilian was nevertheless impressed by his initial findings at the team.
"GEOX Dragon is certainly looking very strong with its new Gen 2 car, and I think the whole team has done a great job understanding the keys to performance and how to get the best out of their in-house developed package straight away," Nasr said.
"There are a lot of talented and incredibly hard-working people within the organization. I’m also looking forward to work alongside Pechito! He’s got a lot of experience and significant achievements in his career so far.
"I am also very excited to work alongside someone like Jay Penske, who wants to succeed in every aspect of the sport and who brings the right energy into the team.”
Nasr has not raced in single-seaters since his F1 exit at the end of the 2016 season, having spent two seasons with Sauber, instead moving into sports car racing in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. He won the drivers' championship last year for Action Express Racing, and recently finished as runner-up in the Rolex 24 at Daytona.
