Di Grassi leads Audi 1-2 in Puebla E-Prix after Wehlein DSQ
Polesitter Wehrlein won the race on the road with a flawless, commanding drive but was excluded from the official classification moments after taking the chequered flag due to a technical infraction.
Both Wehrlein and Porsche teammate Andre Lotterer were disqualified after the German squad failed to declare its tyres. Nissan fell foul of the same regulation, with both its drivers also disqualified.
The penalty for Wehrlein meant di Grassi inherited his first victory since the Berlin E-Prix in season five, bringing to an end the Brazilian’s 22-race streak without a win in FE.
It marked a timely result for season three champion di Grassi, who is driving for his future in FE with Audi set to pull out at the end of the 2021 season.
The nature of di Grassi’s victory may have come in fortunate circumstances but it was nonetheless an impressive performance from the 36-year-old, who charged through from eighth on the grid to head an Audi 1-2.
Teammate Rene Rast secured his first podium of the season in second place to cap off a perfect result for the departing German marquee.
Venturi’s Edoardo Mortara completed the podium in third for his second rostrum appearance of the campaign.
Alex Sims was fourth for Mahindra, ahead of BMW’s Jake Dennis and Techeetah’s Antonio Felix da Costa, whose sixth place finish moves him up to second place in the championship, two points behind Robin Frijns.
Stoffel Vandoorne recovered from the back of the field to finish seventh in his Mercedes, with Jaguar’s Mitch Evans just behind in P8.
Championship frontrunner Nyck de Vries survived a hit from title rival Frijns to score two points in ninth, while Alex Lynn ensured both Mahindra cars finished inside the top-10.
