Moto2 Argentina: Historic pole position for teenager Aldeguer

Fermin Aldeguer continued his domination of the Termas track with pole position ahead of round three of the Moto2 Championship in Argentina.

The MB Converyors Speed Up rider had shown proficency at the track earlier in the day topping both practice sessions on Saturday after Friday’s action was cancelled awaiting the plane with the paddock’s cargo arriving.

He continued his ability to tame the Boscoscuro with a best of 1m 46.306s in qualifying - the best time of the weekend so far.

A first Moto2 pole with just ten races under his belt previously sees the Spaniard become the youngest ever intermediate pole man, taking the honour from Jorge Lorenzo. The sixteen year old will keep the record for years to come with the minimum age for the class due to rise to eighteen at the end of the season.

Joining the record breaker on the front row is Augusto Fernandez, taking second, the same grid position he earned for the Indonesian round with Red Bull KTM Ajo, this time 0.150s behind.

He has fellow Kalex rider Tony Arbolino next to him as the Elf Marc VDS rider made late gains to climb to thirdfor his best qualifying performace so far this season.

Albert Arenas also improved as the session went on to climb to fourth for Autosolar GasGAs Aspar.

His Team-mate Jake Dixon took a sold fifth, working hard to chip away at his lap time.

 

Championship leader Celestino Vietti was on track after being one of the many teams waiting on equipment and looked comfortable as he finished the day sixth for Mooney VR46 Racing Team.

Somkiat Chantra, who won last time out in Indonesia, had walked away from a huge practice crash. His mechanics repaired the Idemitsu Honda Team Asia machine ready for qualifying where the Thai rider went on to claim the seventh best time.

Ai Ogura was eighth fastest just behind his team-mate, with Bo Bendsneyder (Pertamina Mandalika SAG Team) ninth and impressive rookie Manuel Gonzalez completing the top ten for Yamaha VR46 Master Camp after moving up from Q1.

Sam Lowes had a lacklustre session by his high standards - he starts eleventh for Elf Marc VDS.

Zonta Van Den Goorbergh made his mark on the championship for the first time, constantly in the mix towards the top of the timesheets after graduating fro the first qualifying session, the RW Racing rookie claimed a 14th place start.

Cameron Beaubier moved through Q1 with the best time - the rider from the USA went on to take 16th for American Racing.

Pedro Acosta found the going tough as he continues his first Moto2 season after moving up as rookie Moto3 champion. He finished Q2 a lowly 17th.

Lorenzo Dalla Porta missed out on moving into Q2 by the smallest of margins, leaving him 19th on the grid for Italtrans.
