Marc Marquez matched his season best qualifying of fifth at the Austrian MotoGP thanks to a breakthrough in FP3.

Since returning from injury at Portimao, time attack pace between the Honda and he has been a struggle.

Before Saturday’s Q2 session at the Red Bull Ring, Marquez had only one top five qualifying result this season - fifth at Sachsenring as he went on to claim victory.

While the Spaniard doesn’t believe a win or podium is on the cards during the Austrian MotoGP, Marquez believes he can show an ‘acceptable pace to make an acceptable race’ following a breakthrough in FP3.

Marquez said: "In FP3 we continued working on some big things, but sometimes when you try big things you find something interesting and this morning this happened.

"The feeling was good and I kept going with that. In the afternoon the pace was a bit better than last weekend.

"It’s true that we don’t have a pace to fight for the victory, we don’t have a pace to fight for the podium, but we have acceptable pace to make an acceptable race.

"Today was very warm and I think warm conditions helps us a little bit, but still we need more to continue on the same way.

"I ask HRC for more because the bike is not ready to win and they had a good reaction, they brought many new things and you need to try the new things."
