Luca Marini leads Practice 2 for the inaugural Indian MotoGP, as both Repsol Honda riders Marc Marquez and Joan Mir crack the top ten for direct Qualifying 2 access.

But factory KTM team-mates Brad Binder and Jack Miller were among those to miss out and will need to take part in Saturday's Qualifying 1.

Binder looked to have done more than enough with fourth place on his final lap - only to have the time cancelled due to yellow flags, a fate also suffered by rookie Augusto Fernandez.

Improving grip levels meant most riders soon switched across to medium-medium tyres this afternoon, with this morning's best of 1m 45.990s by Marco Bezzecchi (although not counting for Q2) remaining the best of the day until the final half-hour of the extended 70-minute session.

Jorge Martin was the first rider to beat Bezzecchi's FP1 time, courtesy of a 1m 45.672s, which kept the Pramac Ducati title contender at the head of the timesheets until Aprilia's Maverick Vinales pulled 0.3s clear with a quarter of an hour to go.

Vinales then promptly ran wide at Turn 1, a theme throughout the opening day for numerous riders, before obstructing his own team-mate Aleix Espargaro as he rejoined.

Bezzecchi returned to the top soon after, before Martin delivered a 1m 44.8s in the closing minutes. Martin's title rival and world championship leader Francesco Bagnaia was still down in 18th at that stage, but the Italian finally showed his cards on a new soft rear to slot into an eventual seventh.

Espargaro then joined Martin in breaking the 1m 45s barrier, before Marini wrung out the best of the day on his penultimate lap.

Fabio Quartararo - who suffered a nightmare FP1, completing just ten laps due to a pair of gearbox technical issues that also prompted Yamaha to call an early end to team-mate Franco Morbidelli's session - mounted an impressive afternoon recovery to reach sixth before the new tyre time attacks.

Downbeat about Yamaha's chances this weekend due to the long straights, Quartararo then rose to second place on soft rubber as the final ten minutes began. Although pushed back by other improvements, the Frenchman held on to eighth.

Miller and then Aleix Espargaro had incidents in the opening 20 minutes, Miller falling at Turn 12 while Espargaro was (again) caught out braking into Turn 1, running on and halting his Aprilia just before the barrier while on top of the timesheets.

Marini was another rider to miss his braking point, then losing the front on the paint before the start of the gravel trap and dropping his GP22. Ducati test rider and factory stand-in Michele Pirro was another afternoon faller.

Moto3 afternoon practice was delayed by 45mins due to 'marshal posts being checked', causing the following Moto2 and MotoGP sessions to start later than planned.

Marco Bezzecchi leads an extended opening practice for the inaugural Indian MotoGP as Yamaha suffers a nightmare session with two technical issues for Fabio Quartararo prompting the team to also call in Franco Morbidelli as a precaution.

Many riders were caught out under braking for the Turn 1 hairpin and took to the gravel trap, but Takaaki Nakagami fell under braking and sent his LCR Honda somersaulting.

Title leader Francesco Bagnaia was only 15th but remained on used tyres at the end.

The highest top speed was 351.2 km/h (218.2mph) by Jorge Martin.

Bagnaia holds a 36-point title lead over Pramac’s Jorge Martin as MotoGP heads into the unknown with its Indian debut at the Buddh International Circuit.

There has been no prior MotoGP testing ahead of the event, meaning it will be a true blank sheet of paper.

Riders have been using video games to try and learn the 13-turn ex-F1 track, which features several sizeable straights, the longest at just over 1.2km.

“This track will be an equaliser. Those who can adapt fast will gain a huge advantage. It’s an open race,” said RNF team boss Razlan Razali.

Safety concerns have been expressed about the proximity of trackside barriers at Turns 2, 3 and 4, while some paddock personnel - including Marc Marquez - saw their flights delayed by visa issues.

Missing this weekend are Ducati’s Enea Bastianini - who fractured his hand and ankle during a multi-rider pile-up in Catalunya, moments before team-mate Bagnaia was run over following a highside - and LCR Honda’s Alex Rins, who is still recovering from leg fractures at Mugello in May.

HRC test rider Stefan Bradl will replace Rins with Ducati test rider Michele Pirro in place of Bastianini.

Michelin is offering a wider choice of tyres for this weekend, four fronts and three rears, as MotoGP faces its first new event without any prior testing in over a decade.

To help adapt to the new track, both Friday practice sessions will be extended to 70mins each.
