"We're very grateful to Kenny for pitching in and helping RCR out at the last minute," said Richard Childress, president and CEO of Richard Childress Racing Enterprises, Inc. "We'd also like to thank Dale Earnhardt, Inc., for allowing Kenny to step in. The GM Goodwrench Service team is a strong bunch of guys and they will pull through this difficult time and be even stronger when it's over with."
Wallace's last Winston Cup race was March 10 at Atlanta Motor Speedway in a substitute role for the injured Steve Park and the No. 1 DEI team. Wallace also competes full-time in the NASCAR Busch Series and finished 11th in Saturday's Pepsi 300 at the Nashville Speedway.
The drive in Sunday's Virginia 500 comes as an unexpected war-up for Wallace who is set to return to the Winston Cup next weekend at Talladega where he will attempt to qualify a Michael Waltrip-owned Chevrolet.
Wallace will also have to battle his way through the field from 43rd and last starting position as per NASCAR rules when one driver qualifies and another starts. Harvick was set to start 9th.
