One Daytona win not enough for Stewart.

You've heard the term "Double Duty" applied to Tony Stewart before, but in those cases in pertained to Stewart competing in the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on the same day.

Stewart made the double in 1999 and again in 2001 and decided that in 2002 he would forgo the double to concentrate on his full-time job in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series - driving the #20 Home Depot Pontiac toward a Winston Cup championship.

However, a Double Duty is still in Stewart's plans for 2002, it's just not that Double Duty.

In addition to practicing and qualifying The Home Depot Pontiac for Saturday night's Pepsi 400 at Daytona International Speedway, Stewart will take Thursday night to team with veteran road racer Elliott Forbes-Robinson in the Grand Am Rolex Sports Car Series Paul Revere 250.

Driving for the Crawford Race Car factory team, the same outfit Stewart drove for in the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona earlier this year, Stewart will once again satisfy his penchant for driving different race cars in different racing environments.

It's only fitting, for in the week leading up to Daytona, Stewart has wheeled a winged sprint car, a dirt modified, a winged supermodified, a CASCAR stock car and a dirt late model. Thursday night, it'll be a Judd-powered Crawford. It's all just Stewart's way of relaxing - a good way to be before the third restrictor plate race of the Winston Cup season.

The Pepsi 400 will mark Stewart's 121st career NASCAR Winston Cup Series start and so far in 2002 the Joe Gibbs Racing driver has amassed two victories and nine top ten finishes in 16 starts. The driver of the #20 Home Depot Pontiac is currently fifth in the drivers standings just 88 points behind leader Sterling Marlin following the Dodge/Save Mart 350 at the Infineon Raceway.

At the track formerly known as Sears Point Stewart was able to take advantage of problems for many of the top ten drivers in points with a fine run to second place. Should further problems befall Marlin, Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon and Mark Martin this weekend, Stewart could find himself in the points lead heading to Chicagoland.

Most importantly however for Stewart and his Greg Zipadelli-led crew is that they avoid the engine problems that took them out of February's Daytona 500 within the opening five laps. Although the Pontiac Grand Prix was at a distinct disadvantage over rival manufacturers Ford, Chevrolet and Pontiac in qualifying trim around the famed 2.5-mile oval Stewart and Co. had a mean race set-up in place, which unfortunately they never got to use.

During this year's Daytona Speedweeks Stewart won the Budweiser Shootout, won the IROC race and finished second in his Gatorade Twin 125 race.

At this point last season, Stewart had scored just seven more championship points (2,117) than he has this year through the Sonoma road course race (2,110). In 2001, he was fourth in the standings going into Daytona, 234 points behind series leader Jeff Gordon.

The Pepsi 400 will mark mechanic Chris "Spider" Gillin's last race on the road with the #20 team. Gillin, who with his wife Patty has a one-year old daughter named Natalie, will work at the race shop and travel only to test sessions. Gillin joined JGR following the 1994 season and began working as a fabricator on the #18 car before moving to the #44 car as a mechanic in the Busch Series in 1997 with Stewart. Gillin has been with the #20 team since its inception.

Before joining JGR, Gillin built Legends cars from 1993 to 1994 and before that worked as a crew chief for Don Kreitz Jr.'s World of Outlaws Eastern Pennsylvania sprint car team from 1990 to 1992. Gillin is from Reading, Pennsylvania.
