Gordon, like many of the current Winston Cup breed, enjoys a spot of motocross when his schedule allows but he may be living to regret his side-hobby after injuring both ankles at a local Motorsports Park near Pocono on Saturday afternoon. However he will shrug off the pain and take the start of Sunday's Pennsylvania 500 at the 2.5-mile Pocono Raceway in his #31 Richard Childress Racing Cingular Wireless Chevrolet.
Gordon suffered two sprained ankles after jumping a hill at Traxx Motorsports Park at Jack Frost Ski Resort on his Honda CRF450 motocross bike Saturday afternoon. He was with some of the Cingular team members at the time and was immediately evaluated by park physicians.
Dr. Jay Golding, Richard Childress Racing team physician, evaluated Gordon Sunday morning and concurred with the Traxx Motorsports Park physicians that Gordon sprained both ankles. Gordon's left ankle was injured more severely than his right ankle, and Dr. Golding plans to place an air cast on Gordon's left ankle and wrap the right ankle in an ACE bandage for the 500-mile race.
The Cingular team will make the final decision following Sunday's 200-lap event about whether or not Gordon will test Monday and Tuesday at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International.
No decision has yet been made as to weather or not the Cingular team will place a driver on sand-by for Sunday's race should Gordon's injuries prove to be too painful to continue.
