The second round of the 2003 NASCAR Winston Cup Championship played out under sunny skies on a crisp, breezy day in Rockingham, North Carolina with Dale Jarrett taking the win for Robert Yates Racing in an exciting, closely fought encounter.
Jarrett overhauled the red-hot Kurt Busch with less than three laps to go in the 393-lap Subway 400 as the two drivers battled in heavy traffic around the 1.017-mile oval.
Defending race Champion Matt Kenseth followed Busch home in a close third position with Ricky Craven and Jamie McMurray a distant fourth and fifth.
Rusty Wallace and Mark Martin dominated the race in the early going with Wallace leading almost half the race before the abrasive Rockingham surface ate his tyres up and dropped him down the order. He eventually finished more than half a lap behind Jarrett in sixth place with Martin seventh.
Defending Winston Cup Champion Tony Stewart damaged the left front end of his Joe Gibbs Racing Chevrolet during the first 150 laps of the event and struggled home to a 20th place finish, one place ahead of Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip.
With his second top three finish in two races this year, Kurt Busch takes the Winston Cup points lead.
