Green DQ allows Wallace to start.

Mike Wallace and Phoenix Racing have landed a starting spot in Sunday's Aaron's 499 at the Talladega Superspeedway after Hendrick Motorsports driver David Green had his Bud Pole qualifying time disallowed following a rules infraction.

Green's #60 Haas Automation Chevrolet Monte Carlo failed its post-qualifying technical inspection when its rear end was discovered to be lower than regulations permitted. Green had set sixth fastest time in Bud Pole qualifying and was due to make his first Winston Cup start for the #60 team in Sunday's race.

Green had set sixth fastest time in Bud Pole qualifying and was due to make his first Winston Cup start for the #60 team in Sunday's race.

Wallace, who finished ninth in February's Daytona 500 in the #09 Miccosukee Indian Gaming Dodge owned by James Finch, was the fastest of the three initial non-qualifiers on Friday. Even though the #09 Phoenix Racing team was not the highest placed non-qualifier in terms of current owner's points, as Green qualified for the race on speed, only the drivers who originally qualified between positions 7-36 have been moved up one place each with provisional qualifiers unchanged. Wallace will assume the 36th position on the grid.

Wallace originally qualified 37th on speed but was actually listed as the 46th qualifier on official timesheets as the #09 is lower in owners points than fellow non-qualifiers Brett Bodine and Larry Foyt. Foyt, whose #14 Harrah's Dodge also failed post-qualifying inspection and was disqualified, was 45th fastest on speed while Bodine was 41st fastest.

Had Ricky Rudd, who was 38th quickest in Bud Pole qualifying, lapped the 2.66-mile Talladega oval just three hundredths of a second quicker than he did he would have pushed Wallace back to 38th and, in light of new events, moved into 36th. That would have eliminated Wallace completely as the provisional starting slots would have been shuffled, with Bodine's #11 team being the lucky beneficiary.

As it stands however, Bodine, Foyt and Green will not take the start of Sunday's race.
