Driver-turned-team owner Rusty Wallace has revealed that son Steve will pilot his #66 car full-time in 2008, as the squad gears up to run two Chevrolet entries and four drivers in the soon-to-be-renamed NASCAR Nationwide Series.
Wallace Sr confirmed that, alongside his offspring, David Stremme, Chase Austin and a yet-to-be named road racing veteran would share the #64 Rusty Wallace Racing car, with Stremme at the wheel in 17 races and 18-year-old Austin taking in 15, alongside at least five ARCA races. The team plans to put a veteran road racer behind the wheel of the #64 car for the three non-oval events, but would only reveal that discussions are underway with several drivers regarding the role.
Wallace, now an analyst for ABC/ESPN, also announced that his team would switch from Dodge to Chevrolet, while engines would be provided by the Dale Earnhardt Inc/Richard Childress Racing tandem. Wallace's team had competed under the Dodge banner since its inception, with engines provided by Penske-Jasper Engines,, but the owner now feels it is time for a change.
"Chevrolet has really stepped up in a big way to help our team grow, with engineering, aerodynamics, a lot of help on and off the race track," Wallace, the 1989 Winston Cup champion, said, "I want to thank the folks from Dodge, as they have been fantastic to me. But, right now, they support the Nextel Cup Series and don't have a financial involvement in the Busch Series, [while] Chevrolet does. That was a large part of our decision, going with a company that is heavily involved in the Busch Series."
Sponsorship for both cars will be provided, at the majority of events, by Atlanta-based Atreus Homes and Communities. Currently known as HomeLife Communities, the company will undergo the name change on 1 January. Wallace's #66 car will feature another sponsor in ten races, with the identity of the backer to be announced at a later date.
The sponsorship deal saw Stremme's current Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates Cup car run HomeLife Communities logos on its rear quarter panel, while, at next week's Texas race, the entire car will carry the company's current colour scheme.
