Chaz Davies has dominated race two of the Thailand World Superbike round for his and Ducati’s maiden win at the Chang International Circuit ahead of Pata Yamaha pair Michael van der Mark and Alex Lowes.
Despite Kawasaki taking every previous win at the Thai circuit, Davies found key performance gains from his Aruba.it Racing Ducati to build upon his podium finish from Saturday’s opener. After following early leader van der Mark until mid-race distance, the Welsh rider bolted to the front as his front-running rivals struggled further back.
Davies was able to pull out a useful time advantage over the chasing factory Yamaha riders to secure an impressive victory to mark his and Ducati’s first triumph in Buriram. With van der Mark in second and Alex Lowes having to settle for third, race one winner Jonathan Rea recovered a tricky race to take fourth place for Kawasaki.
The reigning triple World Superbike champion appeared to be struggling to get his ZX-10RR to stop under heavy braking, with a similar issue plaguing teammate Tom Sykes, but Rea was able to fight back to grab fourth place from Barni Ducati’s Xavi Fores three laps from the finish. Rea now leads the World Superbike championship by two points from Marco Melandri.
Race two pole-sitter Leon Camier completed a strong round for Red Bull Honda with sixth place having been in the thick of the fight during the opening laps to finish in front of Melandri who suffered with stability problems on his factory Ducati.
Toprak Razgatlioglu secured his best World Superbike result with eighth place for Puccetti Kawasaki ahead of Milwaukee Aprilia’s Lorenzo Savadori with TripleM Honda’s PJ Jacobsen rounding out the top ten.
With Sykes retiring due to a technical issue there was also heartache for Milwaukee Aprilia’s Eugene Laverty and MV Agusta’s Jordi Torres who appeared to tangle at turn 6 on the fourth lap which saw both riders tumble out of the race.
With notable front-runners out it promoted the lower order into points positions with Yonny Hernandez taking 11th place for Pedercini Kawasaki ahead of Althea BMW’s Loris Baz as Roman Ramos (Team GoEleven Kawasaki) and Jake Gagne (Red Bull Honda) completing the points finishers.
