Despite making a good launch, pole sitter Dpminique Aegerter was swallowed up by the riders behind and exited turn one in P5.
Federico Caricasulo initially took the lead before Can Oncu came through at turn 10. Aegerter, wh finished second in race one, was then relegated to sixth by Niki Tuuli.
There was a big crash for Manuel Gonzalez at turn seven as riders began lap two. At the rear of the field, Jeffrey Buis was given a double long-lap penalty due to jumping the start. Gonzalez was taken to the medical centre after suffering an apparent wrist injury.
Oncu and Caricasulo managed to break clear of race one winner Raffaele De Rosa and Tulli, before the latter took third off the Kawasaki rider on lap four. The two leaders continued to scrap for the lead on laps four and five which allowed Tuuli to close in.
The Finnish rider set the fastest lap of the race on lap five and reduced a 1.5 second gap down to just one second. With Tuuli catching, Caricasulo made his move for the lead at turn ten.
A mistake at turn eight from Caricasulo allowed Oncu to get back ahead at turn ten, however, the Italian performed a lovely switchback overtake heading towards turn 11.
Tuuli joined the leading duo on lap seven while also bringing De Rosa and Aegerter with him. Oncu tried again to take the lead at turn 15, but the Turkish rider ran wide along with Caricasulo which allowed Tuuli to go from third to first in one corner.
The leading five then became six as Julez Cluzel closed a three second gap in the space of seven laps.
After creating a small lead of five tenths, Tuuli came under pressure from Oncu with seven laps to go. But just as the Puccetti Kawasaki rider looked set to pounce, it was Caricasulo who got ahead of him.
Oncu then made a mistake in sector four which put him at the back of the six-rider leading group. Meanwhile, Back-to-back overtakes on lap 14 saw Cluzel get ahead of Aegerter and De Rosa for P3.
There was a late crash for Steven Odendaal at turn eight which ended a miserable weekend for the South African.
2019 series runner-up Caricasulo then retook the lead with under three laps to go as the battle for the win was down to the Italian, Tuuli, Cluzel and Aegerter.
As he did from fifth to third earlier on, Cluzel produced two brilliant moves on lap 20 to get through on Tuuli and then race leader Caricasulo.
As the top three began their final lap, Aegerter got through on Caricasulo before charging down Cluzel. The 2021 world champion made what looked to be a race winning overtake at turn 10, however, Cluzel responded heading towards turn 14.
The battle wasn’t over yet as Aegerter went back down the inside at turn 15 which gave Caricasulo the advantage on the exit of the corner, but Aegerter tried to keep the inside line which resulted in contact with the VFT Yamaha man, thus allowing Cluzel to get the perfect run off the corner and take victory.
